WASHINGTON — The left has a political interest in defining the broad backlash against expanded government as identical to the worst elements of the Tea Party movement — birthers and Birchers, militias and nativists, racists and conspiracy theorists, acolytes of Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo and Lyndon LaRouche.
This characterization fits a predisposition of some on the left to dismiss many of their fellow citizens as dangerous rubes. It does not fit the 60 percent of New Jersey independents, the 66 percent of Virginia independents and the 73 percent of Massachusetts independents who voted for Republicans in recent elections. It does not fit Palinism, which, in spite of populist excesses, usually swims in the conservative mainstream. It does not even fit the polling of Tea Party activists and sympathizers, who report a fairly typical range of conservative views. The Tea Party movement, on the whole, seems to be an intensification of conservative activism, not the triumph of the paranoid style of politics.
But the birthers and Birchers, militias and nativists, racists and conspiracy theorists do exist. Some, having waited decades in deserved obscurity, now hope to ride a populist movement like lampreys. But there are others, new to political engagement, who have found paranoia and anger intoxicating. They watch Glenn Beck rail against the omnipresent threat of Saul Alinsky, read Ayn Rand’s elevation of egotism and contempt for the weak, listen to Ron Paul attacking the Federal Reserve cabal, and suddenly their resentments become ordered into a theory. Such theories, in politics, can act like a drug, causing addiction, euphoria and psychedelic departures from reality.
At any time of social disorientation, conspiracy theories have an appeal. They provide a narrative for an apparently random world. They promise that one key can unlock every door.
And these theories contribute to social division. Opponents are not just wrong; they are secretive, ruthless and demonic. They want to overturn the Constitution, establish a police state, cede American sovereignty to a new world order, fight wars for the sake of Israel, carve out a nation of Aztlan in the American Southwest.
The argument of “us against them” is a temptation across the ideological spectrum. But it is intensified by Gnostic insights that pit the children of light against the children of darkness.
Eventually, these theories require repudiation or else they can taint a political movement — like a little red dye turns a container of water pink. This is precisely what William F. Buckley did in the 1950s and ’60s, repudiating Rand and Robert Welch of the John Birch Society, thereby creating a legitimate conservatism that could elect candidates such as Ronald Reagan.
A similar effort will be required today of conservative political and intellectual leaders. It will not be easy. Sometimes it takes courage to stand before a large crowd and proclaim that two plus two equals four.
A short primer in political reality should cover several topics. The “revolution” we are seeing is a metaphor. This is not 1776, in which the avenues of representation were blocked by a distant power. Those who take the revolutionary metaphor too literally are not engaged in politics, they are engaged in sedition. The Obama administration proposes to expand government; it is not preparing to overthrow the government. At this point, it does not even seem competent enough to engage in conspiracy. The Federal Reserve, by the way, just helped to prevent a depression by increasing the money supply. It deserves a little thanks. The reform of Social Security and Medicare is a fiscal necessity; the abolition of Social Security and Medicare would be an act of cruelty. Immigrants are not a bacillus; they are a source of values and vitality. And if they are not a source of future Republican votes, conservatives will be voted into obscurity.
Every political movement is threatened by the impatient and irresponsible. William Lloyd Garrison called for the secession of the North to avoid the contaminating evil of slavery, while Lincoln worked to preserve the union. Malcolm X initially found the American tradition fundamentally corrupt, while Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. found vast resources of reform within that tradition. The heroes of America are heroes of unity.
Our political system is designed for vigorous disagreement. It is not designed for irreconcilable contempt. Such contempt loosens the ties of citizenship and undermines the idea of patriotism. “How can we love our country,” asked Ronald Reagan, “and not love our countrymen?”

by Ken Blackwell –
Pollsters like to say their surveys are like a snapshot, limited to the time and the picture frame in which they are taken. What we are seeing in polling on the takeover of health care by the federal government is a consistent opposition by the American people. No major poll shows the people supporting the House or Senate bill.
The poll most often cited by conservative talk show hosts is that of CNN/Opinion Research. This is the poll that shows the widest gap between those in favor and those opposed—25 points. Rasmussen reports a milder ratio of 16% between those opposed and those in favor. Gallup shows it a near-tossup: 46% in favor, 48% opposed.
What all these polls fail to show, however, is intensity. Intensity in politics is everything.
Those who know the most, who tell pollsters they are following the debate most closely—especially seniors—tend to be most opposed.
Younger people’s ranks include millions who are uninsured. They will be forced to become insured if these bills pass. And their relatively good health makes them cash cows waiting to be milked by the federal government. They are paying less attention to the debate. That’s because they pay less attention to all political debates. That may end soon.
Senate liberals, like Harry Reid, like to compare this health care debate to those other great debates—like ending slavery in the 1860s, like Civil Rights in the 1960s. There are some problems with those historical analogies, however.
Yes, it is true that if President Lincoln had submitted his Emancipation Proclamation to a popular referendum of the American people when he issued it in 1863, it might well have been rejected. But events on the battlefield, especially the bravery of black troops at Fort Wagner, literally revolutionized the views of Union soldiers and their families back home.
On Civil Rights, Southerners white as well as black, quickly came to view the passage of the 1964 act as “an idea whose time has come.” For the rest of the country, support among the majority was always strong.
What we have here is a major piece of legislation about which the most informed and the most attentive have formed strong, negative impressions. They are the majority and they feel it. They reject these bills and they are frustrated that Congress seems not to care.
Perhaps the worst thing that could happen to the Democratic Majority is for these deeply flawed bills to pass. The only way Capitol Hill managers have been able to achieve anything like deficit neutrality is through the transparent maneuver of taxing now for services four years off. Are they serious?
This is just another version of the slogan of J. Wellington Wimpy, the great pal of Popeye the Sailor Man. Older readers will remember Wimpy saying: “I would surely pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Was he Senator J. Wellington Wimpy? I would surely give you health care in `14 for your tax revenues today. Hold the mustard!

Harry Reid
Changes We Can Believe In – American Voters Hit List #3 – Harry Reid D-Nevada
Voters will be voting many members out of Congress that have failed us this year. I sincerely hope that these are among top priorities for American voters across the nation this election year.
Harry Reid
Senate Majority Leader
The Majority leader customarily serves as the chief representative and “face” of his or her party in Senate, and sometimes even in all of Congress if the House of Representatives and thus the office of Speaker of the House is controlled by the opposition party.
As much energy as Las Vegas uses, you wouldn’t think Nevada voters would elect a brainwashed eco-nut to such an influential position as a top legislator in the Senate.
Maybe he doesn’t know that certain “fossil fuels” like natural gas burn very clean in combustion engines. Maybe he is like Nancy Pelosi and doesn’t know that natural gas is a fossil fuel. Maybe he hasn’t heard of clean coal technology. Maybe he doesn’t realize that it takes a while to turn a big ship and we are going to be dependent on various fossil fuels for at least another decade in a transitional period as we advance cleaner and renewable energy sources.
One of his worst blunders was to prematurely wave a white flag of defeat in IRAQ:
Americans just can’t tolerate this kind of irresponsible Legislative leadership grinding down realistic economically viable energy plan progress and waving the white flag of surrender, interfering in International affairs.
Why do Americans keep electing energy ignorant representatives in legislative leadership roles during the middle of an energy crisis? You would think that his limited views of what it will take in the energy conversion interim would also be indicative of his lack of financial knowledge and budgetary foresight.
I am sure I can speak for the majority of Texans and many across the Nation when I ask Nevada Voters to fire Harry Reid and elect someone who will represent the rest of the Nation responsibly.
Harry Reid has a demonstrated deficit of knowledge and prowess in dealing with American energy solutions, the economy and International Affairs. Why would anyone reelect him to office?
He oozes “grey caulk” every time he speaks… The best think he could do for America is never speak in public again!
Harry Reid took $77,000 from Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae.

Changes We Can Believe In – American Voters Hit List #2 – Nancy Pelosi D-California
Voters will be voting many members out of Congress that have failed us this year. I sincerely hope that these are among top priorities for American voters across the nation this election year.
Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of The US House of Representatives
The Speaker of the House is second in line to assume the Presidency, just behind the Vice President. Maybe California voters just didn’t know that when they elected her.
It’s beyond belief for most educated voters that a House Majority Leader could so ardently discourage Bi-Partisan voting on urgent issues in The House of Representatives and doesn’t know anything about energy and energy sources. How do representatives like Nancy Pelosi even get elected?
2 Heartbeats Away – Nancy Pelosi and Natural Gas
Can you imagine a President of the United States that doesn’t even know natural gas is a fossil fuel and has to be drilled for?
We are asking California voters to please keep in mind that Nancy Pelosi as President is just plain scary. In fact, Americans don’t need or want anyone in Congress who doesn’t have sound energy knowledge going forward.
Americans all over the country are asking California voters to fire Nancy Pelosi so that the country has a better chance at a reasonable energy policy. We can’t face the possibility of her ever assuming the Presidential role.
California, please spare the rest of the Nation of another term with an energy ignorant Congressional Leader by voting Nancy Pelosi out of office this year.
Nancy Pelosi took $56,250 from Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae.
Does a National Representative in Congress come any more pathetic than that?

Changes We Can Believe In – American Voters Hit List #1 – Barney Frank D-Massachusetts
Voters will be voting many members out of Congress that have failed us this year. I sincerely hope that these are among top priorities for American voters across the nation this election year
Barney Frank
Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee
Barney Frank has clearly let America down in a position which should have been instrumental in providing financial governance for our free market system. His inattention to primary fudiciary responsibilities in his position has caused All Americans a great deal of grief, yet he is not and will continue to not recognize his own failure:
O’Reilly Blasts Barney Frank On Fannie Mae Mess!!
From the Earl Henry Sholley for Congress Website:
Chairman Barney Frank blames the Republicans and the lack of regulation for the financial meltdown. He refuses to accept any culpability for the current crisis, and keeps making excuses for his role. He loudly denies any involvement in the mess, and even says that he tried to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Here is Barney Frank’s tax and spend mentality/solution:
“There are a lot of very Rich People to Tax down the road and recover some of this money.”:
Shame on Massachusetts voters if they don’t come out in droves and fire this pompous illiterate financial zombie who was supposed to be a primary gatekeeper for our financial systems!!!
Voters in Massachusetts should be ashamed to reelect Barney Frank to office.
Most of the rest of the Nation hopes that Massachusetts will support our best interests by firing Barney Frank and electing Sholley to Congress.
“I believe in less government, fewer taxes, term limits, and public service, not personal enrichment. I will only serve two terms. We have many serious problems that must be solved quickly such as high energy prices, illegal immigration, loss of jobs, the banking crisis, inflation, judicial activism, and protecting our citizens from those who would do us harm. Congress is not doing the Peoples’ will. This is not a time for humor, smart quips, or petty partisan politics. I believe in getting the job done. We need common sense and deliberate action. Where there is a will, there is a way. I want to get America moving again.”
Earl Henry Sholley
Barney Frank took $42,350 from Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae.
