| About The 18th District |
The 18th Congressional District is perhaps one of the most diverse
areas within the city of Houston. In addition to a variety of
neighborhoods, the District is a center for higher education,
civic and cultural activities, business and industry, and government. Neighborhoods within the 18th CD include established upper-income
communities; fixed-income neighborhoods; subsidized housing;
the historic Heights; the changing Freeman Town; newly-constructed
urban lofts, mid-rise and high-rise condos; retirement homes;
and nursing homes.
Both the Central Campus and Downtown Campus of The
University of Houston are located in the 18th CD. In addition, Texas
Southern University, three campuses of Houston
Community College, South
Texas College of Law, and Lone
Star College are within the district.
Constituents of the 18th CD have access to major suburban hospitals
and medical centers, the Houston central business district, many
industrial parks, and the George
Bush Intercontinental Airport with its international transportation support centers.
Major civic centers in the 18th CD include Minute
Maid Stadium,
home of the Houston
Astros; Toyota
Center, home of the Houston
Rockets; and the George
R. Brown Convention Center.
Visitors to the Houston area have access to major hotels such
as Hilton
Americas, Doubletree, Magnolia, Crowne
Plaza and Hyatt
Regency - all located in the 18th CD.
The 18th CD is enhanced by cultural arts centers such as the
Hobby
Center, Jones
Hall, Alley
Theatre, Wortham
Center, Central
Public Library, and Bayou
Place.
Governmental centers located within the 18th CD include Mickey
Leland Federal Building, the Federal Courthouse, Harris
County Courthouse Complex, Houston
City Hall, Houston
Metropolitan Transit Headquarters, both Houston
Police Department Headquarters and the University
of Houston Small Business Development Center.
The 18th CD is rich in recreation areas as well with historic
Allen’s
Landing, Buffalo
Bayou, Tranquility
Park and the
newest gem, Discovery
Green, the downtown Houston park, which will open on April 13,
